Sponsor a Child for Christmas
By Colleen Briggs
Do you remember Christmas when you were a kid? The thrill of trying to develop x-ray vision to see what was inside those boxes? How hard it was to fall asleep on Christmas Eve? Maybe you think of presents, traditions, or delicious food.
But I’d wager that your favorite memory is of someone you love.
Some fifty years later, I vividly recall one of my favorite Christmas memories. I’m sitting on the floor in my Grandma’s house, surrounded by a chaotic scene of torn wrapping paper and smiling faces. My Grandma scans the room with twinkling eyes. “Isn’t Christmas wonderful?!” I’ve long forgotten the toys I received, but my Grandma’s love lingers, fortifying me to this day.
My own heart testifies. There’s no better gift for a child than the gift of family.
Maybe this year, when the transitory seems even less important amidst the challenges we face, it’s time to start a new tradition. Maybe this year is even less about opening presents and more about opening our hearts. More giving. Less receiving.
When you sponsor a Hope’s Promise child for Christmas, you give a gift that lasts for eternity. You give them the gift of a loving family. You give them love, security, hope, and joy that changes life trajectories. Now more than ever, this is what Christmas is all about.
Perhaps the Grinch Who Stole Christmas summed it up best; “Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before! What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas…perhaps…means a little bit more!”
